Professor James Mercer Irvine, K.C. (1862 - 1945)
James Mercer Irvine was born in St Andrews in 1862. His father James
Barland Irvine was a minister of the Free Church in Strathkinness, married
to Maria Powrie on 7 January 1862. James was the eldest child in the
family. He married Isabella Fraser Mackay in 1896 in Edinburgh. He died in
Edinburgh in 1945.
In 1920 he was awarded
the degree of LL.D. by Aberdeen University. At that time he was Sheriff
Principal of Renfrew and Bute.
The
'Old Boys Chronicle' in the
Madras College Magazine
for Summer 1909 reported:
"James C. Irvine, M.A., B.Sc., LL.B.,
Professor of Law in the University of Aberdeen, has been made a K.C."
